Otaku (Oh-Tah-Kuu) is a term with decidedly negative connotations in Japan. It refers to hardcore anime/manga fans, and is at least partially synonymous with NEET. In the United States it has been sort of adopted by pretentious, facepalm-worthy anime fans as a term that refers to anime fandom in general. If ever you should meet someone using this term un-ironically, you may need to settle for liberal application of palm to face. It is, at present, still a crime to murder someone for such an offense against intelligence.
